Announcements
Exam 1: Marh 14 (Tuesday at 10:40)
Exam 2: April 18 (Tuesday at 10:40)----Final Exam: May 27 (Saturday at 16:30)
Content: Functions: limits, derivative of a function of a single variable. Basic theorems of differential calculus: Intermediate value, extreme value, the Mean Value Theorems. Applications: Graph sketching and extremum problems.
Organization of the course: There will be three exams of 60 points each. There will be approximately 5-6 (lab) projects of 10 points each. Your final letter grade will be based on your grades from lab projects (15%) and exams (85%). Our textbook will be in general ''Calculus, Concepts & Computers" by Ed Dubinsky, Keith E. Schwingendorf, and David M. Mathews. Since most details are not sufficiently given in our textbook, I will occasionally give materials not covered in the textbook, so you have to attend the lectures.
General Advice: Every
question you have about the subject should be asked, and I will be happy to try to answer
it. Don't let your questions sit around gathering dust, because later portions of the
course will make use of what came earlier. The longer you wait, the harder it is to catch
up.Your homework is an essential part of the course. You learn the subject by solving
problems. But I'd like you to do more than get correct answers to the homework problems. I
want you to learn to write mathematics clearly. Remember that you are writinginEnglishaboutmathematics,
and your pupose is to present a readable (as opposed to merely legible) document.
Therefore, your mathematical writing should be more than a sequence of calculations, but
should consist of complete sentences, in which are embedded the mathematical expressions.
(A good way to test whether you have produced a readable document is to try to read it
aloud without adding words that are not on the page. If it says what you want to say,
you're ok.)
